When students work in centers, they are able to develop different skills, which they are not, at the time, conscious about. They cooperate, learn from each other, share, take turns, manage time, choose to learn according to their interests, build, think, and communicate their thoughts and ideas amongst each other.
I had the opportunity of offering a full training program for our three Kindergarten campuses, and would love to share some of my experience. “It seems easy for the teacher to imply such activities”, said one of the Interlomas’s Teachers.
No, “easy” is certainly not a word that I would use for the teacher because planning and getting material together involves hours of hard work. However, when centers are well planned, the teacher has the entire time to focus on the students
We all learned that centers allow students to each have a twenty-minute long period with the teacher, with maximum, four more classmates. This allows personalized education to actually take place. As well, by working in centers, students are able to construct concept for their learning process from their classmates, more tan from the teacher, which is one of the main principles when it comes to Constructivism. Lastly, centers allow both fast and slow learners to have challenges, which they can overcome with effort and commitment.
The amazing part about training Lomas Hill’s Kindergarten teachers on such system, was finding out that all of them had already applied many of the principles of centers, without knowing their exact or professional name. Therefore, I must say that as a school, we do count with passionate, knowledgeable, prepared teachers, who impulse students to become better every day.
